I have been involved in rugby for over 30 years as a player, coach and referee. As a player I was fortunate to play for both military sides, when serving in the Armed Forces, and civilian sides where I had the  opportunity to captain a number of teams during my playing career before retiring in 2010. After retirement I achieved my Level 3 coaching badge and took up a coaching role for my local team at U15,  coaching them through to senior colts level. I then took up a coaching role with the senior team before attending my ELRA referee course and moved into refereeing in 2011.

As a senior referee within Oxfordshire Society of referees I was asked to take up the role of President carrying out the role for 3 years, handing over the role at the end of 2017/18 season. In that time I worked tirelessly in collaborating closer with Oxfordshire RFU CB and all 17 clubs with the county. This has borne fruit as now the CB and the society are working as one looking to provide consistency across Oxfordshire.

I also sat on the committee of the Southern Federation as Exchange Officer for two seasons looking at the pathway for referees to progress them to Group and PNR. I was asked to join the County Executive as a member of the Executive Committee for Oxfordshire RFU as Chair of Competitions in 2018. This was a new role where I worked closely with age grade volunteers as well as senior competitions managers to look at how we could improve the rugby experience for all.

From 2019 I was nominated and voted in as the Chairman of Oxfordshire RFU which has been a great honour for me and a culmination of my hard work as a volunteer over the 30 plus years  involved in rugby. From a cultural view I am keen to work closely with the chairpersons of all the clubs and committee members of the Oxfordshire RFU to look at ways to modernise our CB to support grass roots rugby via the mantra of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship.

From a Customer Focus perspective I am looking at ways the CB can create a positive club/player/volunteer experience from competitions to support roles. I am passionate about rugby, and what the values it  brings. I have been part of the RFU Leadership academy as well as being on the third cohort for the RFU Leadership in Union Programme run by Ashridge Hult International Business School, which took place during the season 2018-2019. These programmes have given me the skills and knowledge I am able to bring into the role.

To have the opportunity to be part of and at the forefront of a progressive CB is exciting and challenging. To be able to use the knowledge gained from my years as a rugby volunteer will enhance and hopefully providing the right culture to grow rugby to its full potential with Oxfordshire.
